Welcome to Høgtun Folkehøgskole!
Høgtun is a Norwegian Folk High School, located on one of Norway’s many beautiful fjords. There are multiple high peaks around the town of Torvikbukt, providing incredible views and endless opportunities for adventure out in the nature. A grocery store, sports hall, sports stadium and the marina are all located within a short walking distance from the school. Torvikbukt is also close to two major cities, Molde and Kristiansund, which both contain airports.

What is Folk High School?
Folk high schools are one-year boarding schools built on the idea that there is more and unique ways to learn about ones self and experience post secondary than a career or degree. We provide an opportunity for you as a student to focus on subjects that interest you and therefore teaching you to grow as a person. This is accomplished with a small and close-knit learning community exam and grade free. These are schools where you can broaden your horizon, deepen your social insights, grow more confident in yourself, and learn the tools for lifelong learning and inner happiness.
The term “folk high school” is a literal translation of the Norwegian word “folkehøgskole”. However, this translation may give you the wrong idea. Folk high schools are not “high schools” in the sense of upper secondary school institutions designed to prepare students for college or work through exams. Folk high schools are separate from the rest of Norway’s educational system. Students can be any age and can have any level of educational experience. Indeed, these are schools for all people or all “folk” as we say in Norway. However, almost all students who attend folk high schools are young adults between the ages of 18 and 25.

The school year starts in August and ends in the middle of May, you can apply for Høgtun at any time.
As an international student at Høgtun Folk High School…
…you get to be a part of an international environment but at the same time learn the Norwegian language and culture through the “Learning Norwegian” course with students from all over the world, along with taking activity courses with the other Norwegian students. The activity courses vary from year to year so be sure to check out what courses we offer in our menu for the next school year. The students, both Norwegians and internationals live on campus. By living together, trying new activities together, eating meals together and so on, you will build friendships that will last a lifetime. The dorm life is unique and inspires to creativity and activity.

Facilities
In addition to access to a music and comprehensive arts facility, the school has its own small cinema, cafe, photo room, internet bar and student common room where you can relax or interact with your classmates. Moreover, Høgtun is considered the best Folk High School in Norway for its wide range in sports and activities.

Torvikbukt is an idyllic place for Høgtun, lying between the cities of Molde and Kristiansund. With large mountains and countless fjords, it is a place that is perfect for sports and outdoor life at every level. It rests in the middle of the scuba diving paradise, Hustadvika. There is a large indoor sports arena, outdoor sports ground and a great lawn for soccef. Plus, there are great beach volleyball courts, which the students have access to at all times. As you will see, the school makes use of its surroundings. Take a closer look at our courses that we offer.
Folk High School is a school for life. A year at Høgtun is approximately 185 days. Personal growth and a lot of adventure are important items on our agenda. The classes and dialogues are just two of the methods we use to reinforce this. But folk high school is examination free and we do not follow any curriculum. You are the center of our attention!
Christian school means that its foundation is based on Christian values. We wish that the school will follow the Christian influence. You will experience this in daily life in the morning prayers where the word of God is often read. These are 15 minute gatherings in the morning. The other Christian meetings and activities are not compulsory. Normally these take place in the evenings.
Our desire is that the school can be a home for you, with a positive, safe and warm social environment.
